Mammography

Breast Cancer Awareness

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), breast and cervical cancer have been identified as a national priority with increasing incidences occurring. The Association urges women to go for annual health check-ups and screening in order to detect cancer early.

Lorraine Govender, CANSA’s National Manager: Health Promotion says that, “Research has shown that a regular breast self-examination plays an important role in discovering breast cancer, compared to finding a breast lump by chance. While not all breast lumps indicate cancer, they should be investigated. It’s vital to educate yourself and get to know the warning signs and symptoms.”

Globally, October also known as Pink Month, has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness month to raise awareness and show support for everyone affected by breast cancer. Women from the age of 40 should have annual mammograms. Due to early detection, mammograms can save lives.
